The fixer, after an initial brief with the client about the story to be told, researches through local sources to verify its feasibility and any nuances that may have been overlooked, as well as the problems to be solved and the timelines for realization.
In-depth research on the field or based on data and documents
Before and during the reportage, the fixer gathers information through institutional sources or conducts interviews that they can then translate and relay to the journalist to expand the material already collected together (quotes, official statistics, bios, etc.) or provide useful material for planning (e.g., to understand the perspective of a character to be interviewed).
Access to documents
Through their own channels or institutional ones reserved for media, the fixer procures documents or other useful material (photos, videos, orders, etc.) for the publication.
Organization and execution of interviews
Once the themes and characters have been defined, the fixer plans the work schedule: makes arrangements for interviews, plans visits, suggests means of transport, and places for accommodation, relying on their knowledge of the territories.
Translations
During interviews and throughout the duration of the on-site activity, the fixer acts as a simultaneous interpreter between journalists and interviewees, as well as for any daily activities (booking transportation, canceling a hotel, etc.).
Italian bureaucracy
The fixer works to obtain the necessary authorizations or permits that are often difficult for foreign media representatives to secure.
Logistical assistance
The fixer can procure cars and drivers, or if requested, drive themselves using their vehicle.
